How do I know if chemical peels are suitable for me?

We will guide you regarding suitable treatment times, it is best to avoid bright sunlight for 3 weeks after treatment. It is not suitable if you are pregnant or breast feeding. Skin peels are not suitable for irritated skin, if skin has been treated with laser within the last 6 weeks or if you have used acne medication in the last 6 months.

How safe are chemical peels?

All of our treatment are extremely safe when carried out by our fully qualified and highly experienced practitioners. For some of our skin peels you will start by using a pre peel treatment program to protect your skin and enhance your results.

Will I feel any pain or discomfort during my chemical peel treatment?

Our patients do not describe our skin peels as painful. Sometimes you will feel a little tingling, burning or a prickly sensation on the skin. A peel can be neutralised and stopped at any point in the treatment. After treatment your skin will feel warm and can be slightly red. We provide full aftercare advice and apply a premium SPF to the skin for added protection.

Are there any associated risks with chemical peels?

There are no serious risks associated with this treatment as long as your aftercare is followed correctly. Please ensure you provide us with your full medical history and update any changes which may occur.

How much downtime is usually needed and what should I expect?

After treatment you should expect your redness or mild inflammation or swelling. Deeper peels will cause your skin to flake and shed. Do not pick the skin as it may leave unwanted pigmentation or scars. Deep peels take 5-7 days to conclude.

Procedure

Skin peels are best performed after several weeks of preparation. Pretreatment with skincare products prepares the skin for the peel and stops the peel burning and causing hyper pigmentation. The length of preparation recommended depends on your skin type and concerns.

Treatment areas

When you and your skin are ready for a peel the area is cleansed thoroughly, the peel is applied and after acting it is removed. Post procedure spf must be worn.

Skin peels do feel itchy and may sting the skin on application. Ideally they are left on the skin for 5 minutes but you must tell your doctor if it feels too strong for you. Pre procedure skincare specifically recommended for your skin type and with the peel in mind should be used for best results.

Treatment areas

Treatment is a safe and effective way of refreshing and rejuvenating the skin as well as treating fine lines, texture, tone and wrinkles.

Any area of skin can be suitable for a peel from the face and back to the décolletage and neck. Arms and legs too, especially if there are scars and pigmentation problems.

Pre-treatment is essential in order to prevent the peel burning and causing damage to the skin. In some clients a good medical skin care regimen is better than a peel.

Side effects

At Thames Skin Clinic we like to assess your skin thoroughly. Before going ahead with a peel you are likely to be started on a pre peel treatment. For glycolic peels you will be asked to us a specific glycolic acid serum for 2 weeks prior to your treatment. For ZO skin health deeper skin peels you will need to start a ZO routine for 6 weeks (or more depending on your skin type). Preparation of your skin is vital to allow desensitisation and ensure your skin peel does not damage your skin.

Most patients can undergo a glycolic peel without any side effects. The treated skin is virtually normal in appearance. On rare occasions a patient may experience mild sloughing, weeping or scabbing. Some redness is temporary and normal. Redness may be covered with makeup.

If scabs are picked, scarring may occur or areas of hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation may result.

Side effects are minimal if any. Your skin may sting and look flushed or red.

Deeper peels cause crusting and peeling of the skin. This is normal and part of the peel process.

They are not suitable for irritated skin or if skin has laser treat within the last 6 weeks, if you are suffering from a viral infection or have used roaccutane in the last 6 months.

It is essential to us SPF sun protection after skin peels.

Aftercare

On the day

Do not touch, rub or massage the area or apply makeup for at least 6 hours.

Your skin may sting or burn with some flushing or redness for 1-2 hours after a peel.

You must apply strong SPF sun cream and can use a moisturizer, SPF is essential to avoid post procedure hyperpigmentation.

SPF is ESSENTIAL

For the next few days

It may feel tighter and may feel warm to touch; this may last for 1-2 days.

Eperdermolysis (whitening) and peeling may occur and could last up to 3 weeks. Depending on the peel and tolerance.

Do not put on normal make up until healed. Mineral make up may be applied.

Your specialist will recommend a home care program for you to follow for best results.

It is advised to avoid sun, tanning and other cosmetic treatments and wait 2-4 weeks before fillers and injectable wrinkle treatments.

Treatment courses

A course of skin peels will give you the best results. I would suggest 6 at monthly intervals.

Continue with your personal skincare products and have regular reviews.

Skin Peels vary by the area of treatment given and the type of peel used to achieve the best results. We often get asked about the cost of treatment. At Thames Skin Clinic we pride ourselves on results rather than focus on the price of a treatment, it is more important that we get the correct quality of product rather than offer cut price treatments, products and services (especially when it comes to medical treatments). You will never see Thames Skin Clinic advertising services on social coupon sites such as Groupon as we believe they have a negative impact on our customer safety, results and satisfaction. We also wish to abide by the advertising regulator and work in a safe ethical manor.

Our prices reflect the skill, training and premier product choices we have made as well as the true reflection of the beautiful bespoke clinic surroundings.
