How to care for your skin this winter

Posted 28/10/2021 | Uncategorised

Now that the nights have started drawing in, it may not be just your body clock that is feeling the affects. Skin can become dry, itchy and irritated.

There are many simple ways to combat the causes of dry winter skin and help keep skin feeling moist and supple all winter long.

Try to reduce indoor heating.

Heating zaps moisture from the air, and therefore, from the skin too. Hotter showers also mean stripping the skin of its natural oils which can cause cracking in the outer layer and dehydration. When skin loses its moisture barrier, its ability to protect itself is weakened.

We still need SPF.

Winter doesn’t mean that your SPF needs to go to the back of the cupboard until next year. Whilst there may be less UVB, levels of UVA, HEV (Visible light from smart phones, computer screens etc) and infra-red (IR-A) are still significant enough to cause skin ageing.

Thames Skin Clinic SPF Recommendations:

ZO Skin Health products can be purchased by our patients at our clinic, or ordered online. Some medications require a prescription, please get in touch if you need further information regarding prescription services.

Vitamin Soluble Supplements.

As UVB is the wavelength that stimulates vitamin D (sunshine vitamin) production, levels can drop in the winter months. Skinade targeted solution Derma Defense A&D Boost offer a daily drink containing 3000iu dose of vitamin A (retinol) & 3000iu dose of Vitamin D to help stimulate cell renewal, elasticity and hydration.

Keep up with professional skin treatments.

Regular hydrafacials will help to keep your skin clean, clear and hydrated, while also allowing your every day skincare products to penetrate deeper into your skin.

It is also a perfect time to have treatments that are not able to be performed in the summer months due to increased risk of post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation e.g laser for pigmentation and vascular lesions and resurfacing treatments.

And don’t forget sclerotherapy for thread veins on the legs! Those nice warm stockings that we dread to wear in the summer will be comforting this season!
