Hyperpigmentation
What is hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation is the skins response to pigmentation cells being stimulated. These cells are called melanocytes and when activated create melanin, the substance that causes skin to. turn darker. When melanin is secreted unevenly this causes patches of pigmentation in the skin.
Sun spots and age spots are common examples of hyperpigmentation which is characterised by the appearance of brown or darker patches on the skin surface.
What causes Pigmentation?
The most common causes of Hyperpigmentation are:
- Sun exposure
- Hormonal changes, pregnancy, menopause. The use of oral birth control pills.
- Inflammation
- Acne inflammation
- Healing from skin injury
- Stress
- Thyroid disease
- Medication including contraception, thyroid and anti inflammatory drugs, treatment for hormonal disorders like Addison’s disease and Cushing’s syndrome.
- Genetic predisposition
How do you treat Hyperpigmentation?
We recommend a medical assessment with one of our doctors who will examine your skin and interpret a detailed skin analysis before discussing treatment options for hyperpigmentation.
Active medical prescription skincare can be effective on all skin types. Treatment programs most effective in evening skin tone and clearing pigmentation target the living skin cells with ingredients like hyrpdquinone, vitamin C, retinoic acid and retinol. Slightly gentler programs would include vitamin C, Alph hydroxy acids (AHAs) BHAs Kojic acid, Mandelic acid.
Chemical peels and skin peels are extremely helpful in addition of professional skincare plans as they penetrate deeper into the skin to lift out unwanted pigmentation. The deepest skin peels require pre treatment with an active skincare plan.
Hydra-dermabrasion with HyrdaFacial is tailored to assist skincare programs to deliver pigmentation super serums deeper into the skin.
Laser treatment forms the gold standard pigmentation treatment for lighter skin types. Specific laser wavelengths target the darker pigmentation cells causing the hyperpigmentation to fade, clearing sun spots and photo damage.
Plasma non surgical lesion removal is preferred by some patients. Pigmentation lesions may be permanently removed under local anaesthetic during a plexr lesion removal session. Our doctors use Plasma BT for our plasma treatments because it delivers the best results.
