An ingrown hair occurs where a hair curls back or grows sideways through the skin.

Most prevalent with coarse or curly hair. There may be an infection in the hair follicle (folliculitis) or razor bumps (pseudofolliculitis barbae). Most common in skin that has been shaved or waxed but can appear anywhere.
